Matchday One – Sounders FC host Philadelphia Union

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Alright! Match day one — rather, MLS First Kick — is upon us. Getting life situated to enjoy match day to it’s fullest has consumed my energies so much that I haven’t really had time to digest the monumental occasion that is today. However, my lungs are warmed up and my passion is ready to be dispensed at Royal Brougham Park this evening.

We welcome the newest addition to Major League Soccer, the Philadelphia Union, to roast in our cauldron. If you catch any of their twitter feeds, the Sons of Ben (with a mightily convenient acronym: SoB’s) are bringing a heavy contingent.

I do not have a match analysis, but I will put down what I think will be the starting lineup: Keller (GK); Gonzalez, Hurtado, Marshall, Ianni (back four); Alonso, Evans (central mids); Zakuani, Levesque (wide mids); Ljungberg (withdrawn forward); Montero (forward). I agree with what I’ve read elsewhere that replacing Riley (RB, suspended from a red card in the last game) with Brad Evans would deprive Ljungberg of a key outlet in the midfield. Ianni, in my mind, is the next defender on the depth chart, but not necessarily a wide one. The right side of the pitch will be interesting to watch tonight, as well as through the first few matches as Sigi decides who will be our stalwart in the right midfield (Estrada? Fucito? Where’s Nyassi these days?). I welcome any thoughts you may have.

And, considering we have a player very dependent on refereeing (Ljungberg), I was pleased to see tomorrow’s officiating crew on MLS Daily:

Referee – Ricardo Salazar
SAR (bench) – Corey Rockwell
JAR (opposite) – Peter Manikowski
4th – Paul Ward

MLS is known for it’s less than consistent officiating, so hopefully we can keep our eyes on these guys a little more carefully this year.

Some other story lines I’ll be paying attention to are, one, whether or not the ’sold out’ stadium is indeed full, as even up to this morning there is a huge market for tickets on Craigslist, Stubhub, etc. It seems everyone and their uncle thought they could pay for their season tickets by buying extras and selling them…I hope all tickets find themselves in the hands of willing participants!

Two, will we score? That’s an obvious question, and obviously a crucial one. Will Freddy and Freddie trip over each other or work some beautiful interplays? I guess we’ll know in nine hours. And, in the spirit of the day, I’d like to put something on the record: Zakuani will score many, many goals for us this season.

What are your predictions, hopes and fears for the coming months?

To top it off, Seattle Sounders consumerism is slightly more justified as Ruffneck (official scarf maker of MLS) is based in Seattle. It’s a cool story:

Have a super day wherever you may be; tangible soccer is back in our lives!

smsupers visit Vancouver, BC for Sounders FC pre-season match against Whitecaps

As the Premier League stiffs into its typical three-horse race, soccer in the pacific northwest peeks out from under its winter cover. Our Sounders near opening day (pardon me, they near MLS “First Kick”) and have three more pre-season matches to find any strategy in the world that may perhaps score goals.

The squad took to Vancouver, BC for the first of their final three tune-ups this past Saturday. In post-game interviews Sigi says (read: blames) “offside” so many times I feel Fake Sigi emerging. Someone said somewhere that the FO should tell him to zip-it on the call discussion (hey, pull Ljungberg in while you’re at it), and I couldn’t agree more.

Although, I do remember five offside whistles during one single rendition of “There were eleven Canadian loonies on the pitch, there were eleven Canadian loonies on the pitch, there were eleven . . . and the Boys from Seattle, the Boys from Seattle, the Boys from Seattle shot one down . . . . There were ten Canadian loonies, ten Canadian loonies. . . .” I’ll let you carry the tune home, like the tune of the referee’s whistle carried us home. So, the calls were suspect and aggravating (Zakuani goal disallowed) to those who journeyed and rendezvoused for ‘first football’ under big Vancouver skies; however, they don’t excuse the questionable decision-making being used around the box (especially on through balls), that led to turn-overs time-in-and-time-out. Not sure what was happening on the wings at all through the match . . . we did have some possession and Ljungberg, who’s putting on weight to deal with American soccer (Prost Amerika), appeared to make himself known pretty damn well.

Photos of the journey and smsuper shake-around may show up. Yes, photos make content compelling, but your author was too compelled by the experience to hold a camera . . . or set down a two-pole. Tyler’s flag was looking glorious, and I flew the (red?@*!?) FC ABATTOIR banner in honor of the MT reunion and in hope that the day truly would feel like a slaughter house. Indeed, it felt more like soft green grass poking in my back — left me itching for more, not close to quenched. And that soft, grassy feeling the match left makes me feel lazy, so, I’ll let Gaschk and Sigi do some work for me:

It was fantastic to see BC friends, meet some new ones (only costing a rescued-from-the-gutter American flag, that we may actually see again) and visit a new soccer stadium. Other highlights include chanting “KFC” at the Whitecaps mascot (yes, they have a mascot) that appeared to be no more than a rented chicken costume with a jersey on, and watching the always-classy Sigi and Keller acknowledge the traveling supporters. Cheers to all the super matches coming up! And let’s put a few past the lumber harvest Thursday!

Pre-Season: Sounders 3 – Whitecaps 2

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Since the match was played in Arizona and the live coverage was a less-than stellar soundersfc.com blog feed, unless you live in Arizona you’re itching for some visuals from the first non-intersquad scrimmage of the season. Here are the interviews and match highlights courtesy of Sounders FC:

Want to relive last year?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The offside is home to everything football and has doggedly persistent bloggers for teams in just about every league on the globe. Today I stumbled upon awesome achievement compiling a timeline of highlights from every Sounders FC game of 2009. If you want to re-experience all the magic and the pain and possibly not accomplish anything for the rest of the day check it out. Props to whoever created this exceptional recap, the timeline and description allows you to pick out your favorite inaugural memories and press play.

A Taste of Things to Come

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Next week signals more than just the beginning of the Olympics for Vancouver. A more exciting event, for this sports fan, is occurring Thursday the 11th of February. The Sounders are closing out their stint at the training facilities in Casa Grande, AZ with a training match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Live coverage of this match will be available via soundersfc.com. The Whitecaps will be getting plenty of MLS preparation in Arizona, playing pre-season matches against the Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake after kicking things off against our Sounders. While the Whitecaps’ squad won’t be what it will in 2011, this little teaser will be a taste of things to come and kudos to Soundersfc.com for bringing unprecedented accessibility to fans and stoking the fires of what will be an excellent rivalry up and down Interstate 5 in 2011. Stay tuned for details of February 11th’s Cascadia Showdown.

UPDATE:
Which apparently means no analysis, for now I hope you and Prost Amerika don’t mind if I simply display their schedule so discussion may ensue.

2.9.10 Pitch Invasion published a cool article detailing a few of the myriad considerations and processes that go into creating MLS and USL league schedules.

Super Sounders

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

As most of you may know, I am one of very few Manchester United fans in Montana. This allows me to relish the victories United often gets, but it also puts me under heavy fire once they are in shambles. Over the years I would like to think my knowledge of football has increased along with my passion for United.

Now I find myself starting over with a club I have actually seen live on the pitch. Not only was the Sounders squad and coaching staff thoroughly impressive, but the atmosphere the whole organization provided the Sounders Faithful in Qwest stadium was jaw dropping. The Sounders should be a top 5 club in the MLS this up coming season, and I am looking forward to becoming an even bigger supporter. With the addition of playing in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2010 the Seattle Sounders are quickly becoming a premier club in the States and beyond…. {tried uploading sounders match pics but said security guidelines could not allow it}

Democracy in Sports: Sounders FC Alliance Council speaks

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

With a year under our belt and after numerous discussions, the following changes were proposed and adopted by current Council members and Sounders FC ownership.

  • The 11 current Council members will serve a 2nd term ending in November of 2010
  • Newly elected Council members will serve two year terms
  • One vote per season ticket holder account will continue
  • 2010 voting will not be reset meaning 2009 voting tallies will continue into 2010
  • After the 2010 season, Council voting will be reset
  • Council members elected in 2010 will continue to serve into 2011 as per the newly adopted two year term distinction
  • full Sounders FC article

These adoptions are fairly insignificant with the glaring exception of the decision to stand by the ‘one vote per account’ rule. Every four years each member of the Alliance — Sounders season-ticket holders — is armed with one vote as we determine whether or not to retain the current GM. The Alliance, in theory, also influences “the direction of the franchise.” How this influence is exerted comes down to populism (if enough people are upset, obviously the front office will act), the efforts of supporters groups and the Alliance Council. In my mind, the latter two parties are responsible for making sure the direction of the club accurately reflects the desires of its supporters before their is mass unrest. As it stands, unless you purchased your ticket yourself, you do not have a vote every four years — nor an Alliance “membership.” Even if your partner attended every match in the seat next to you, because you purchased the pair of season tickets, they do not vote.

Many favor a change that would truly give each Sounders season-ticket holder a vote. For those who attend every match and live the same lifestyle as all of us to not have the same vote is mind boggling, and not democracy. It sounds eerily like some other representation system, you know, the democracy where money speaks. I know it’s not like the woman who purchases 22 tickets receives 22 votes. However, if the intention is truly to get an accurate and complete representation of faithful Sounders supporters — and I believe it is — let’s get as many of them voting as possible, not just those with the funds to purchase a membership or their tickets in the preseason.

Obviously, the challenges likely lie in the infrastructural headache of verifying which of these tickets are regularly used by the same person or if a person is regularly using the same group of tickets to attend every match. And if this even possible.

    Solutions:
“Just buy your own tickets,” you say. Yes, this is a positive I see in the current system. It encourages people to get their tickets squared away early and decreases the demand for tickets from people who have purchased in bulk. However, as willing as the Sounders ticket reps may be, the fact of the matter is we’re talking about a sold-out season for a major sporting team where it’s not always possible to get tickets with the group you’d like.

My next idea would be that for groups purchasing a grip of tickets, the Front Office make it an option for the purchaser to assign tickets (along with each ticket’s vote) to specific people, have them physically come to pick them up and prove identification, then give them a vote for the season.

Am I making something out of nothing or does this issue give you pause also? How well do you feel the Alliance is succeeding in representing our voices?

Hanauer: CONCACAF Champions League will be a priority

    Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

from a chat session between supporters and Adrian Hanauer on Jose Romero’s Seattle Times blog.

    Adrian Hanauer:
I don’t want to rank them because every tournament in which we play is important. However, CONCACAF Champions League is a personal and team priority. We have said in the past that we want to be able to compete internationally. This is our opportunity to show that we are one of the best, if not the best, team in the region. And by winning CONCACAF we could then compete in the world club championships against the best club teams in the world. [later response] This is a huge challenge and opportunity for our team. Champions League requires quality and depth. The existing structure of MLS rosters makes that very difficult to accomplish, but we are confident in our abilities to manage this issue.

This is exactly the attitude our Front Office should display. I commend this vision and can’t wait for the tournament to start, it’s easily the competition I most look forward to this coming season. Adrian says a decision has not been made on whether the games will be played at Starfire or Qwest.

More gems from the q&a session:

    Adrian Hanauer:
Yes. Absolutely a priority and a pet project of mine. Having more Sounders fans at away games always helps our chances to steal points on the road.

That fits in nicely with our vision. As does this:

    Adrian Hanauer:
Our revenue stream has been larger than most of our peers around the league. That said, our cost structure has also been higher. But, if there are opportunities to invest in our collective future, we will certainly do so. One area of extreme interest is youth development. We have the opportunity over the next five years to build an extraordinary system in partnership with Washington Youth Soccer, to develop players for our first team.

    Adrian Hanauer:
We are currently at about 95% renewal rate. Now we are beginning to contact the 8,500 ticket waiting list. Our goal is 30,000 season tickets. Call all of your friends and tell them to buy.

    Adrian Hanauer:
Great question and great point. We currently have one full-time scout, which is one more than any other MLS team (Kurt Schmid). We also have an extensive network of agents and scouts who we feel provide us with a competitive advantage. But this is definitely an area in which we may invest more resources in the future.

Favorite Sounders moment off the pitch:

    Adrian Hanauer:
The moment just after the singing of the national anthem at every home game. I love the increase in volume, tension, the chants from the ECS, the flags . . . that moment of anticipation before the kickoff.

    2010 kit tidbit:

    Adrian Hanauer:
I can’t promise shale grey but there might be a little surprise in the jersey category coming this summer.

Wit and intelligence throughout the entire interview. Adrian’s doing a damn fine job.
