MLS and Players Friends Again – Roll On Columbia!

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Sounders 2010 will happen.

Extreme relief. As Adrian Hanauer said, there was confidence all along that an agreement would be reached; however, everyone realized the weight of the stakes. (Player strike likely would have damaged MLS beyond repair…but, ah, no more speculation needed!) Players are relieved, staffs are relieved, owners are relieved, and anyone who cares about soccer in the US is relieved. Finally, the bottle of fermenting excitement will be released. The details of the new five-year CBA have not been released. We do know the players got increased salaries (higher salary cap and minimum salary), increased freedom to move around within the league after being released by one team, and most will be getting guaranteed contracts. Owners didn’t budge on free agency. I’m curious to see if the actual number of players allowed on the roster went up, as the Sounders will be competing on three fronts this summer.

Watch and listen to Sigi and Sounders express their joy at putting this debacle behind us:

FOUR DAYS UNTIL FIRST KICK — game on!

FC Dallas begs spectators to “comeback”

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

They are desperate down there in that empty financial capital. Seriously. The marketing campaign is titled “The Comeback” and features bald men screaming insanely. In face paint.

Apparently these faux-Sams create the environment they envision:

We hope that our fresh approach to building an environment that is authentic to soccer will energize those who have previously not renewed.

FC Dallas proved their marketing savvy with an average attendance of 12,500 last season, good for 13th highest out of 15. Their remedy:

“Discounts for former ticket holders”

FC Dallas are reaching out to all previous Ticket Package Holders and asking them to come back. For a limited time, all previous Ticket Package Holders will receive a discount on purchasing tickets for the 2010 season.

Two-stick ideas are coming at me a mile a minute. Does mockery count when its subject is a sitting duck? Who cares! They’re gonna drown in the Sound no matter. Looking forward to July 11 (from that schedule I’ve only managed to mention) immensely.

UPDATE:
Which apparently means no analysis, for now I hope you and Prost Amerika don’t mind if I simply display their schedule so discussion may ensue.

2.9.10 Pitch Invasion published a cool article detailing a few of the myriad considerations and processes that go into creating MLS and USL league schedules.

Super Sounders

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

As most of you may know, I am one of very few Manchester United fans in Montana. This allows me to relish the victories United often gets, but it also puts me under heavy fire once they are in shambles. Over the years I would like to think my knowledge of football has increased along with my passion for United.

Now I find myself starting over with a club I have actually seen live on the pitch. Not only was the Sounders squad and coaching staff thoroughly impressive, but the atmosphere the whole organization provided the Sounders Faithful in Qwest stadium was jaw dropping. The Sounders should be a top 5 club in the MLS this up coming season, and I am looking forward to becoming an even bigger supporter. With the addition of playing in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2010 the Seattle Sounders are quickly becoming a premier club in the States and beyond…. {tried uploading sounders match pics but said security guidelines could not allow it}

Hanauer: CONCACAF Champions League will be a priority

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

from a chat session between supporters and Adrian Hanauer on Jose Romero’s Seattle Times blog.

Adrian Hanauer:
I don’t want to rank them because every tournament in which we play is important. However, CONCACAF Champions League is a personal and team priority. We have said in the past that we want to be able to compete internationally. This is our opportunity to show that we are one of the best, if not the best, team in the region. And by winning CONCACAF we could then compete in the world club championships against the best club teams in the world. [later response] This is a huge challenge and opportunity for our team. Champions League requires quality and depth. The existing structure of MLS rosters makes that very difficult to accomplish, but we are confident in our abilities to manage this issue.

This is exactly the attitude our Front Office should display. I commend this vision and can’t wait for the tournament to start, it’s easily the competition I most look forward to this coming season. Adrian says a decision has not been made on whether the games will be played at Starfire or Qwest.

More gems from the q&a session:

Adrian Hanauer:
Yes. Absolutely a priority and a pet project of mine. Having more Sounders fans at away games always helps our chances to steal points on the road.

That fits in nicely with our vision. As does this:

Adrian Hanauer:
Our revenue stream has been larger than most of our peers around the league. That said, our cost structure has also been higher. But, if there are opportunities to invest in our collective future, we will certainly do so. One area of extreme interest is youth development. We have the opportunity over the next five years to build an extraordinary system in partnership with Washington Youth Soccer, to develop players for our first team.

Adrian Hanauer:
We are currently at about 95% renewal rate. Now we are beginning to contact the 8,500 ticket waiting list. Our goal is 30,000 season tickets. Call all of your friends and tell them to buy.

Adrian Hanauer:
Great question and great point. We currently have one full-time scout, which is one more than any other MLS team (Kurt Schmid). We also have an extensive network of agents and scouts who we feel provide us with a competitive advantage. But this is definitely an area in which we may invest more resources in the future.

Favorite Sounders moment off the pitch:

Adrian Hanauer:
The moment just after the singing of the national anthem at every home game. I love the increase in volume, tension, the chants from the ECS, the flags . . . that moment of anticipation before the kickoff.

2010 kit tidbit:

Adrian Hanauer:
I can’t promise shale grey but there might be a little surprise in the jersey category coming this summer.

Wit and intelligence throughout the entire interview. Adrian’s doing a damn fine job.

Sounders add to the roster *updated with video*

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

at the MLS SuperDraft. sounders_fc

First round (11th overall pick): David Estrada, F, 5′8″, 160 lbs (UCLA) soundersfc.com story

At least Estrada can juggle:

Second round (27th): Mike Seamon, F/M, 6′1″, 175 lbs (Villanova)

Third round: no Sounders pick.

Fourth round (59th): Jamel Wallace, D/M, 6′1″, 182 lbs (San Diego State) San Diego State bio

Round three is underway, but Sounders have previously traded their pick in this round to the Dynamo. I believe we will add one more player in the fourth round. It looks like the Sounders are working to add variety and depth to the attacking positions. To me, these picks seem to shore up some of the depth lost when Le Toux headed to Philly. However, I know nothing about these guys, and I’m especially curious to see if Estrada, following the success of Zakuani, will be competing for starting positions or to get in with the regular substitutions/rotation squad.

Time to scour You-Tube to see our newest Sounders in action….

What do you think of the new acquisitions? There will surely be lots of info popping up in the Sounders blogosphere in the coming days.

We’ve been slacking, but this is like rediscovering your childhood blanket…if that’s describable.

Recent live football: many Supers and Dallas at home. Great times.

Beyond being too big of news for anyone to comprehend — well, hopefully some must — this may even be energizing enough to start bloggin’ regularly again. (FSN, you’re getting close to third base; this is pretty much a safety.) From the front office:

Residents of the Seattle/Tacoma area can watch Sunday’s match on KING5 at 12:00pm PT, preceeded by the PEMCO Pregame Show on KING5 beginning at 11:30am PT. Residents outside of the Seattle/Tacoma area can catch the game on FSN Northwest beginning at 12:00pm PT.

FSN Northwest covers a five state region: Alaska, Washington, Montana, Idaho and Oregon. Key DMA’s covered by FSN include Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Yakima/Tri-Cities, Eugene, Medford/Klamath Falls, Bend, Boise, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Missoula, Billings, Helena
Butte/Bozeman, Great Falls, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and Eureka.

Supporters outside the Northwest who subscribe to a premium cable/satellite sports package that includes FSN NW may also view the match live.

FSN NW will also provide match replays throughout its entire coverage area on the following dates and times:

In this Super’s world, there is nothing parallel to FSN providing regional Sounders coverage.

Rest assured,
More to Come
