I have to get my hands on some of these…
Wednesday, March 17th, 2010Sounders Don’t Score
Saturday, March 13th, 2010I woke up this morning — something good I can take away from yesterday. Only a couple of bruises, my voice more-or-less intact (ECS please don’t hurt me). Whoopdie-doo: Timbers one, Sounders zero. Dancing, twirling and more prancing in front of the goal without shots. Seriously, Montero at times looked like a figure skater trying to waltz the ball through three NHL players converging at once. Ah well, would have been nice to beat P*rtland. But my drizzly sentences have nothing to do with them and everything to do with Sounders going 180 consecutive preseason minutes without seeing the net whoosh as an allowed goal.
Remember the last 180 post-season minutes we were scoreless? Remember the Qwest goal droughts of last summer? Ladies and gentlemen, Nkufo doesn’t arrive for close to four months, and look at Ljungberg, who played fantastic last evening, but obviously can’t do jack without support. Montero needs four diapers a match to hold his attitude. I think Evans is practicing at Right Back because Riley (“James Riley. Sounders number seven!” see, my spirits aren’t in the dumps.) is suspended for the first match. Oh, guys also looked slow to get into the box, slow to shoot, slow to pass, and fast to run into the corner where they would hold it slow before turning the ball over. But, I’ll leave the match analysis to other more informed folks…I read Prost Amerika, Sounder at Heart and Fake Sigi damn regularly.
As I was saying, I woke up today. Well, yesterday, also, I awoke. With a heck of a lot more excitement and energy for displacing ‘real’ life from under the pressure of matchday excitement. Turns out, I’m fairly pleased with the result of my distraction:
One more for the supers repertoire! UP THE SOUNDERS. This was likely the biggest match of the season for the Timbers (certainly their ’support’), and it’ll make beating them when we’re actually earning points all the merrier. Sounders march on.
And ’twas absolutely wonderful to be back in Qwest.
Vancouver Away
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010As the Premier League stiffs into its typical three-horse race, soccer in the pacific northwest peeks out from under its winter cover. Our Sounders near opening day (pardon me, they near MLS “First Kick”) and have three more pre-season matches to find any strategy in the world that may perhaps score goals.
The squad took to Vancouver, BC for the first of their final three tune-ups this past Saturday. In post-game interviews Sigi says (read: blames) “offside” so many times I feel Fake Sigi emerging. Someone said somewhere that the FO should tell him to zip-it on the call discussion (hey, pull Ljungberg in while you’re at it), and I couldn’t agree more.
Although, I do remember five offside whistles during one single rendition of “There were eleven Canadian loonies on the pitch, there were eleven Canadian loonies on the pitch, there were eleven . . . and the Boys from Seattle, the Boys from Seattle, the Boys from Seattle shot one down . . . . There were ten Canadian loonies, ten Canadian loonies. . . .” I’ll let you carry the tune home, like the tune of the referee’s whistle carried us home. So, the calls were suspect and aggravating (Zakuani goal disallowed) to those who journeyed and rendezvoused for ‘first football’ under big Vancouver skies; however, they don’t excuse the questionable decision-making being used around the box (especially on through balls), that led to turn-overs time-in-and-time-out. Not sure what was happening on the wings at all through the match . . . we did have some possession and Ljungberg, who’s putting on weight to deal with American soccer (Prost Amerika), appeared to make himself known pretty damn well.
Photos of the journey and smsuper shake-around may show up. Yes, photos make content compelling, but your author was too compelled by the experience to hold a camera . . . or set down a two-pole. Tyler’s flag was looking glorious, and I flew the (red?@*!?) FC ABATTOIR banner in honor of the MT reunion and in hope that the day truly would feel like a slaughter house. Indeed, it felt more like soft green grass poking in my back — left me itching for more, not close to quenched. And that soft, grassy feeling the match left makes me feel lazy, so, I’ll let Gaschk and Sigi do some work for me:
It was fantastic to see BC friends, meet some new ones (only costing a rescued-from-the-gutter American flag, that we may actually see again) and visit a new soccer stadium. Other highlights include chanting “KFC” at the Whitecaps mascot (yes, they have a mascot) that appeared to be no more than a rented chicken costume with a jersey on, and watching the always-classy Sigi and Keller acknowledge the traveling supporters. Cheers to all the super matches coming up! And let’s put a few past the lumber harvest Thursday!
Simply put, I am beyond ready.
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010As I peruse the photos in Jamaal’s latest post, play chants through my headphones and rue the errors surrounding my just-aware-of-question “are we in 118 or 119?” I feel the urge to express myself. The section anyone’s in is of little relevance, make an impact this season. Let’s show our capabilities.
The beginnings of some two-stick ideas I’ve had, based around a crest Tyler came up with. Do you want to post that crest and other stuff, Tyler? If we collaborate, our tifo will get SUPER. Have fun.
Sounders Experience
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010FC Dallas begs spectators to “comeback”
Thursday, February 4th, 2010They are desperate down there in that empty financial capital. Seriously. The marketing campaign is titled “The Comeback” and features bald men screaming insanely. In face paint.
Apparently these faux-Sams create the environment they envision:
We hope that our fresh approach to building an environment that is authentic to soccer will energize those who have previously not renewed.
FC Dallas proved their marketing savvy with an average attendance of 12,500 last season, good for 13th highest out of 15. Their remedy:
“Discounts for former ticket holders”
FC Dallas are reaching out to all previous Ticket Package Holders and asking them to come back. For a limited time, all previous Ticket Package Holders will receive a discount on purchasing tickets for the 2010 season.
Two-stick ideas are coming at me a mile a minute. Does mockery count when its subject is a sitting duck? Who cares! They’re gonna drown in the Sound no matter. Looking forward to July 11 (from that schedule I’ve only managed to mention) immensely.

The 2010 schedule is complete! In a few hours we will know ALL league matches, ESPN/FSC/telefutura televised matches and can start planning for away matches.
Expect an updated post later tonight that includes all relevant and exciting Sounders dates and information. Supers, are you ready?! Sounders Oh-Ten is upon us!
UPDATE:
Which apparently means no analysis, for now I hope you and Prost Amerika don’t mind if I simply display their schedule so discussion may ensue.
2.9.10 Pitch Invasion published a cool article detailing a few of the myriad considerations and processes that go into creating MLS and USL league schedules.

USA – Honduras: where are you watching?
Friday, January 22nd, 2010
The weekend’s marquee matchup for smsupers is the friendly between world cup-bound USA and Honduras (Sat. 6:30 mst on FSC). Remember, we’re the reason Honduras qualified when USA pushed on and equalized in their last qualifier against Costa Rica. Both teams will likely use sides composed of fringe players. For the US, this means MLS players who are currently not in season and not very many, if any, of our European based players.
Where do you guys plan to watch? Tyler, do you think you’ll be able to view the match in Vancouver? This super has to work, so I look forward to hearing who you guys think may help round out the roster this summer in South Africa.
Feel free to discuss and add other matches on your radar this weekend in the comments.
Super Sounders
Thursday, January 21st, 2010
As most of you may know, I am one of very few Manchester United fans in Montana. This allows me to relish the victories United often gets, but it also puts me under heavy fire once they are in shambles. Over the years I would like to think my knowledge of football has increased along with my passion for United.
Now I find myself starting over with a club I have actually seen live on the pitch. Not only was the Sounders squad and coaching staff thoroughly impressive, but the atmosphere the whole organization provided the Sounders Faithful in Qwest stadium was jaw dropping. The Sounders should be a top 5 club in the MLS this up coming season, and I am looking forward to becoming an even bigger supporter. With the addition of playing in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2010 the Seattle Sounders are quickly becoming a premier club in the States and beyond…. {tried uploading sounders match pics but said security guidelines could not allow it}
Democracy in Sports: Sounders FC Alliance Council speaks
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010With a year under our belt and after numerous discussions, the following changes were proposed and adopted by current Council members and Sounders FC ownership.
The 11 current Council members will serve a 2nd term ending in November of 2010 Newly elected Council members will serve two year terms One vote per season ticket holder account will continue 2010 voting will not be reset meaning 2009 voting tallies will continue into 2010 After the 2010 season, Council voting will be reset Council members elected in 2010 will continue to serve into 2011 as per the newly adopted two year term distinction
These adoptions are fairly insignificant with the glaring exception of the decision to stand by the ‘one vote per account’ rule. Every four years each member of the Alliance — Sounders season-ticket holders — is armed with one vote as we determine whether or not to retain the current GM. The Alliance, in theory, also influences “the direction of the franchise.” How this influence is exerted comes down to populism (if enough people are upset, obviously the front office will act), the efforts of supporters groups and the Alliance Council. In my mind, the latter two parties are responsible for making sure the direction of the club accurately reflects the desires of its supporters before their is mass unrest. As it stands, unless you purchased your ticket yourself, you do not have a vote every four years — nor an Alliance “membership.” Even if your partner attended every match in the seat next to you, because you purchased the pair of season tickets, they do not vote.
Many favor a change that would truly give each Sounders season-ticket holder a vote. For those who attend every match and live the same lifestyle as all of us to not have the same vote is mind boggling, and not democracy. It sounds eerily like some other representation system, you know, the democracy where money speaks. I know it’s not like the woman who purchases 22 tickets receives 22 votes. However, if the intention is truly to get an accurate and complete representation of faithful Sounders supporters — and I believe it is — let’s get as many of them voting as possible, not just those with the funds to purchase a membership or their tickets in the preseason.
Obviously, the challenges likely lie in the infrastructural headache of verifying which of these tickets are regularly used by the same person or if a person is regularly using the same group of tickets to attend every match. And if this even possible.
Solutions:
“Just buy your own tickets,” you say. Yes, this is a positive I see in the current system. It encourages people to get their tickets squared away early and decreases the demand for tickets from people who have purchased in bulk. However, as willing as the Sounders ticket reps may be, the fact of the matter is we’re talking about a sold-out season for a major sporting team where it’s not always possible to get tickets with the group you’d like.
My next idea would be that for groups purchasing a grip of tickets, the Front Office make it an option for the purchaser to assign tickets (along with each ticket’s vote) to specific people, have them physically come to pick them up and prove identification, then give them a vote for the season.
Am I making something out of nothing or does this issue give you pause also? How well do you feel the Alliance is succeeding in representing our voices?
